How To Make The Ramos Gin Fizz (1)

If you have ever been to New Orleans, you would definitely have seen the Ramos Gin Fizz on the menu. This is one of the most famous co*cktails to come out of the Big Easy. Invented in the late 1800s, Ramos Gin Fizzes are still just as popular as ever. Although the Imperial Cabinet Saloon no longer exists, you can find a Ramos Fizz in almost every bar in the French Quarter and the rest of New Orleans. My favorite is at the Roosevelt Hotel! Don’t wait until Mardi Gras to try it!

Invented by New Orleans bartender Henry Ramos at the Imperial Cabinet Saloon, the Ramos Gin Fizz was initially named the New Orleans Fizz, due to its setting. That Ramos’s original recipe required vigorous shaking of the co*cktail in a shaker for at least a 12 minute shake time! The co*cktail was so popular that “shaker boys” were hired specifically to shake, shake, shake in pursuit of the obtaining the perfect creaminess and frothy topping!

Now I doubt that anyone can shake a co*cktail for 12 minutes straight and by making sure you do the dry shake first for a couple of minutes than you can achieve pretty good results at home.

What goes into a Ramos Gin Fizz recipe?

This is one of the classic co*cktails with loads of ingredients. It one of these co*cktail recipes that most people let their bartenders (aka shaker men & women) make as it’s a bit complicated, but don’t let that stop you from trying one at home!

  • Gin: London Dry Gin or Old Tom Gin are usually what’s asked for, but you can get creative and use whatever gin you love!
  • Fresh Lemon juice: Lemon juice adds a citrusy, tangy, and refreshing flavor to this co*cktail. It cuts through the creaminess, thus balancing out the flavors.
  • Fresh Lime juice: Although lime juice is also acidic it offers a hint of sweetness.
  • Fresh Egg white: Raw egg whites are the magical ingredients that makes this drink creamy, rich, and foamy. Without egg whites, this drink is nothing but ordinary and has none of that white foam we love. Try aquafaba if you want to achieve it without using eggs.
  • Simple syrup: With all the different citrus juice in the co*cktail, you need a little sugar to balance it out.
  • Heavy cream: Heavy cream also offers richness and, obviously, creaminess to this original Ramos Gin Fizz recipe
  • Orange Blossom water: A few drops of this highly scented water work wonders to add the citrusy flavors of orange, the slight bitterness of the peel, and the floral notes and aroma of the orange blossoms.
  • Club soda: Of course, you can use seltzer or sparkling water as well!

You will definitely be needing aco*cktail shakerfor this one! Grab ajigger, abarspoon, anda rocks glass for this classic gin co*cktail. You don’t need a team of bartenders to help you, just remember dry shaking is what it’s all about!

Firstly, the best method is by adding the gin, simple syrup, heavy cream, lemon and lime juices, orange blossom water, and egg white to a co*cktail shaker. Make sure there is no ice in there. Then start the dry shake! Start the first shaking for as long as you can. The more you shake, the better the foam. Now unseal the shaker, add as much ice as you want and begin the second shake, as long a shake as you can! Strain the co*cktail into a chilled glass, either a collins glass or a highball glass. Now, pour a little soda water into the shaker so that you loosen the foam in it. Then pour the cold water directly into the highball glass and serve.

  • 🍸Top Tip(le): Keep these tips in mind when making this co*cktail:
    • Add a dash of vanilla extract for more flavors.
    • You can use half and half instead of heavy cream as well.
    • Use orange-flavored gin for more flavor.
    • You can always line the rim of the glass using orange blossom water and sugar.
