Oppenheimer (2023) | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Bilge Ebiri New York Magazine/Vulture That the director turned this most devastating of stories into a riveting pop culture phenomenon without ceding one inch on its tragic dimensions is surely an achievement for the ages. Dec 9, 2023 Full Review Oppenheimer (2023) | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Sergio Burstein Los Angeles Times What he [Nolan] has put before our eyes definitively deserves to be seen, as does Cillian Murphy's performance in the role of Oppenheimer and the irreconcilable but fantastic Robert Downey Jr. in the role of Lewis Strauss. There's a great movie hiding amidst all of the formal pyrotechnics. But I guess it's too much to ask for a lighter touch from a director who is about as subtle as an atomic bomb. FAQs

What do rotten tomatoes say about Oppenheimer? ›

Oppenheimer marks another engrossing achievement from Christopher Nolan that benefits from Murphy's tour-de-force performance and stunning visuals. Oppenheimer is an intelligent movie about an important topic that's never less than powerfully acted and incredibly entertaining.

What do critics think of Oppenheimer? ›

The horror of the bombings, the magnitude of the suffering they caused and the arms race that followed suffuse the film. “Oppenheimer” is a great achievement in formal and conceptual terms, and fully absorbing, but Nolan's filmmaking is, crucially, in service to the history that it relates.

Was Oppenheimer Jews? ›

Childhood and education. Oppenheimer was born Julius Robert Oppenheimer into a non-observant Jewish family in New York City on April 22, 1904, to Ella (née Friedman), a painter, and Julius Seligmann Oppenheimer, a successful textile importer. Robert had a younger brother, Frank, who also became a physicist.

What did Einstein say to Oppenheimer? ›

In the final scene, Oppenheimer asks him: “When I came to you with those calculations, we thought we might start a chain reaction that would destroy the entire world”, to which Einstein replies: “I remember it well. What of it?”. Oppenheimer replies; “I believe we did.”

Is Oppenheimer worth the hype? ›

For all it's worth, Oppenheimer is a great movie and, in many ways, has lived up to and even surpassed my exceptions. Starting with what is the most striking part of the film, which is the film's cinematography. The cinematography in this film feels dramatic like there is a sense of importance in every shot.

Why was Oppenheimer so skinny? ›

Cillian Murphy went to extreme lengths to lose weight for his role in "Oppenheimer." The Irish actor plays the creator of the atom bomb, J. Robert Oppenheimer, in the movie. His costars say he only ate "like, an almond every day" and looked "emaciated."

What was Oppenheimer's IQ? ›

Summary. Oppenheimer's IQ of 135 places him in the 99th percentile of intelligence, while Einstein's estimated IQ is 160, in the genius category. The IQ test oversimplifies intelligence, missing out on factors like creativity and emotional intelligence pivotal for Oppenheimer and Einstein.

Was Einstein a friend of Oppenheimer? ›

Albert Einstein plays a significant role in the Christopher Nolan film, "Oppenheimer." In reality, Einstein and J. Robert Oppenheimer knew each other but weren't friends until much later. The real Einstein wouldn't have helped Oppenheimer with top-secret calculations about the atomic bomb.

Did Truman call Oppenheimer a crybaby? ›

Truman did call Oppenheimer a 'crybaby scientist' but not directly or during the depicted event. Events in Oppenheimer film differed slightly from historical reality, adding drama to the scene. Nolan clarified Truman's remark as a response to Oppenheimer expressing guilt post-atomic bombings.

According to the AHF, Peter still lives in New Mexico working as a carpenter and has three children: Dorothy, Charles and Ella.

What did Feynman think of Oppenheimer? ›

Feynman had elsewhere written, “he was a wonderful man.” But they didn't hold him in high regard as a working physicist. The problem was he still pretended to be one. There was too much pretending. Oppenheimer was an extraordinary man who did a great deal for American physics.

The cinematography is beautiful and the aesthetic of the movie is also beautiful. Anyone who is interested in the history of war and bombs would love this movie but I think anyone would enjoy this movie. Oppenheimer is one of the best movies I have seen this decade.

Is Oppenheimer Oscar worthy? ›

“Oppenheimer” wins the Oscar for best picture, sweeping the major awards tonight. Producer Emma Thomas admitted that winning best picture was a dream come true and praised director — and her husband — Christopher Nolan for his talent. “He is brilliant. He is singular,” Thomas said.

How accurate is Oppenheimer movie? ›

Heavily based on "American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer" by Kai Bird and Martin Sherwin, the movie stays pretty faithful to the man's eventful, unusual life. But that doesn't mean there aren't some exaggerations or inconsistencies.

Is Oppenheimer the best movie of the year? ›

But the tale of Manhattan Project leader J. Robert Oppenheimer transformed into an awards juggernaut and became one of the biggest success stories of 2023.
