Jimmy Spencer used his head as well as his gas pedal in fending off Mark Martin's bid for a record victory yesterday in the All Pro BumperTo-Bumper 300 Busch Grand National stock car race in Concord, N.C.

Martin, who kept losing ground on pit stops and making it up on the track, caught Spencer for the final time 21 laps from the end of the 200-lap event at Charlotte Motor Speedway. At the end, it was Spencer's Chevrolet by seconds about three car -lengths over Martin's Ford in the battle of Winston Cup regulars. But the decision remained in doubt until the final turn as Martin tried hard to earn his 31st career BGN victory, which would break a tie with Jack Ingram as the top winner in series history. Spencer gave himself a chance at the win when he stayed on the track and in the lead as Martin pitted for new tires during the sixth of seven caution periods. Martin was eighth for the restart on lap 156.

Spencer, who earned $53,200, averaged 127.089 mph. MARLIN JOINS TEAM SABCO Felix Sabates, calling it "the worst-kept secret in racing," announced the signing of driver Sterling Marlin to be part of Team Sabco in 1998. Marlin, a second-generation NASCAR star and a two-time Daytona 500 winner, joins Joe Nemechek and Wally Dallenbach Jr. as part of the three-car operation. He replaces Robby Gordon, who apparently will return to Indy-car racing in 1998.

WALTRIP LOSES OUT Darrell Waltrip will miss today's UAW-GM 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway because Terry Labonte came up .01 second short in qualifying. That's the time differential by which Gary Bradberry beat out Labonte for the 38th and final qualifying spot in today's 43-car field. Had Labonte matched or beaten Bradberry, he would not have needed the provisional starting position that goes to the most recent series champion who fails to qualify. REZENDES WINS POLE Dave Rezendes, without a driving job since late August, won his first NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series pole with a record-breaking qualifying lap at Sears Point Raceway in Sonoma, Calif. Rezendes, the defending winner of today's race, secured a ride in a Tom Gloy-owned Ford and made the most of the opportunity.

The Assonet, Mass. veteran sped around the 2.52-mile road course at a speed of 91.026 mph. FAST DRAGSTER Cory McClenathan recorded the second fastest time history during qualifying for the 10th annual Pennzoil Nationals in Millington, Tenn. McClenathan had a speed of 318.58 mph in the Joe Gibbsowned McDonald's dragster, second only to Kenny Bernstein's 318.69 recorded last fall at the Texas Motorplex in Ennis, Texas.
